The largest community in Delta County, and the county seat, Delta is home to approximately 6,500 residents. Another 4,000 inhabitants can be found within a five-mile radius of Delta. The County has a population of approximately 27,834. According to Rand McNally's Places Rated Retirement Guide, Delta has been rated in the top one-third of communities for climate, housing, health care, personal safety, economics and recreation. Delta is a great place to visit and a wonderful place to live. It is a small, rural agricultural community, but not so small that you have to go out of town to obtain the "necessities of life." Grand Junction is about 42 miles north of Delta on Highway 50 and Montrose lies 21 miles south. The climate is exceptional with warm summer temperatures in the 90's, accompanied by a cool breeze. Autumn is crowned with beautiful colors that lead into our "Banana Belt" winter. Daytime temperatures are normally in the high 20s to low 40s with the overnight lows rarely below 0. Snow is minimal, and it is usually melted by mid-morning. If you enjoy snow, Grand Mesa, the world's largest flat top mountain, is just a short distance to the north, & offers ice fishing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. In the summer, over 200 trout-filled lakes beckon fishermen. Hiking trails, mountain biking and four-wheeling can also be enjoyed atop the Grand Mesa. Delta also boasts a modern recreation center featuring an indoor swimming pool. We also have a golf course, historic indoor theatre featuring Dolby® 5.1 Digital Surround Sound and a drive in theatre. There are modern airports in both Grand Junction and Montrose offering flights to Denver, Phoenix, and Salt Lake with connecting flights world wide. During ski season the Montrose airport offers direct flights to/from Dallas, Houston, Newark and Chicago. The majestic Black
Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (the East Rim is considered by many
to offer more spectacular views than the West rim) is to the East, as
is the West Elk Wilderness area. South is the San Juan Mountain Range,
and to the west is the Uncompahgre National Forest. |
